Is it safe to reuse (wash with hot soapy water and/or bleach) ziploc-type food storage bags?

I do it all the time and it is also good for our environment — recycling you know.

Waste not, want not. As the saying goes.

Plastic is amorphous, which means particles, such as liquid or food, can get trapped within the plastic and be difficult to wash out. Disinfectants like bleach kill germs that feed on those particles. If you don’t disinfect the plastic periodically, it will smell of decaying food.

This is different from metal, which is crystalline and easily cleaned.

Yes, as long as the bag never contained raw meat. You don’t want to take a chance that you didn’t clean the bag thoroughly enough. Your health is not worth the price of a few ziploc bags.

we do…. however, not when it was something like chicken, pork or other bacteria causing items. cookies, dry snacks – sure wash air dry (stand them up in your dishwasher and let them air dry. forthe others that had really nasty type things – rinse them and use for trash, animal messes and things like that!
