I am trying to start a year supply of food storage. What are some basics that I should remember to include?
It’s been suggested to prepare for periods of scarcity or famine and planning for catastrophe or emergency. If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. Call me crazy, but at least I’ll be eating good and have other items of need that won’t be available at stores.
Long-term food storage: Honey, and dried products.
Wheat. Powdered milk. Legumes (peas & beans). Dried fruit. Dried vegetables.
Short-term food storage: Canned goods
Whatever nutritious canned goods you customarily eat.
Be sure to store water and salt as well.
Store what you eat, and eat what you store (keep it rotated).
Get in touch with your local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (look them up at www.lds.org) and meet the Relief Society president. She can tell you just what to store for you and your family.
You are wise to store food. Back in the late 1970s, I ran out of food and money and had to go two weeks without eating. I would have been glad to have had some food storage then!
