How long does it take the body to develop one pound of muscle?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

I recently bought one of those scales that measure body fat % along with body weight & muscle weigt via a light electric current sent though the body. I am pretty certain it is accurate b/c it is in line with the calpers test two trainers did on me. What my question is, is how long does it take the body to gain muscle? I realize that you cant turn fat into muscle, but that you have to burn fat and the muscle will reveal it’s self, However I want to gain muscle over all. I am curious as to how long it will take to gain one pound of muscle in the body. B/c I really cant afford to lose to much muscle (only 94lbs of muscle) And my trainer said that you will loose some muscle initially while losing fat. So I want to bulk up a little so I dont lose to much muscle. Any input is much appreciated.

A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but muscle mass is more compact and only takes up 1/3 the space! If you go on a healthy weight loss program, which includes regular exercise, you will almost certainly gain muscle and lose fat. The scale may stay the same or may even go up, but you lose inches, since muscle takes up less space.

The only way to gain weight is to create a calorie excess. So, in theory, to gain ½ pound to a pound a week, that means creating an excess of 250-500 calories per day. Whether or not those extra calories go towards building muscle or body fat depends on whether or not you exercise. Of course, as with weight loss, genetic differences make it easier for some people to gain weight and harder for others. If your metabolism speeds way up every time you eat more, you may have to consume many more calories before you’ll achieve results

How often should I do weight training in relation to cardio?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

I’m starting a more intense work out regimen and I want to include both intense cardio and weight training, but I’m not sure how often to do the weight training. I am planning on 60 minutes of intense cardio (30 min of incline hiking and 30 min of running intervals) 5 days per week. How often should I plan on doing the weight training as well?

What fitness and nutrition certification should I go with?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Serious question …

Looking for second career to keep me busy & am looking to finally get a job that I enjoy. Would like to be a general fitness trainer at the gym and am looking for a course that is comprehensive, not-crazy hard, and a good value for the money. It would need to be primarily distance learning, something internationally recognized preferred, a year or less to complete, and the cost under $4K.

There are manu suitable courses which help you get a certificate for the practice of this job…check out in this site www.aftacertification.com/ you may get a good answer.

How can I start bodybuilding with a diet without eating several meals a day?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Hi I am a bit of a chubby guy and was wanting to start bodybuilding. I go to the gym in the morning a few days a week working different bodygroups as needed but don’t have the time to have the six meals a day required because I work a lot. Is there any eating plan I could use to still bodybuild with great results but not have to have six meals a day?

u need to loose weight 1st then do it-cut the fat out then start bodybuilding!food and the gym is the most important thing about body building!my bf a body builder he said u cant turn fat into muscle!i see my bf eat like ten tins of tuna a day he eats it with red sauce it take him like a mun 2 eat it!n he also has protein n carb drinks n other shakes like cell mass !
b4 he goes to the gym he always has like a big meal like 2 hours b4 of like rice potatoes chicken stuff like that but he dont eat six means a day he has his main meals n all the tins of tuna and all the shakes all of which r quick and good if ur busy!

How much Muscle in pounds can you build with bodyweight exercises?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I want a rough estimate to how many pounds of muscle can I build with just bodyweight exercises if you are weak to start off with them. I am overweight and I’m planning on building some muscle and losing fat from bodyweight exercises. Will I be able to get abs and a defined, muscular body just by doing bodyweight exercises? When I say defined, muscular body, I’m thinking maybe 25% of the muscle Arnold Schwarzenegger had when he was bodybuilding.

Do you plan on doing any cardiovascular work along with the exercises? you can lose the body-fat and uncover the muscle you already have. You can also tone up the muscles you already have by conditioning exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, crunches etc.
The average male can naturally only put on 12-15 lbs of lean muscle in a years time. Without strength training with resistance, I’d say you could tone up your existing muscle and probably put on a few (5-7) pounds of additional muscle in a year. Doing the cardio to burn the fat is the most important thing you can do to shed the fat. In fact you would have to do it in order to accomplish your goal. Eating healthy is key as well. I like to recommend the 40-30-30 plan. 40% carbs, 30 % Protein, and 30% fat. Except for dinner, I then suggest only a lean meat and green veggies (low carbs). Don’t need them at night, you want your body to burn fat then. My clients saw great results with this. Good Luck Hope this helps.

and ASK ME ANYTHING…… where did you get your info, cuz you’re way off base pal!

How can I optimize my weight training workout?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

My goals are size and strength.

I do both weight training and cardio – alternating 3 days weight training, 3 days cardio, and 1 day rest.

My weight training workout alternates between 3 sets each of two muscle groups, and then doing the same again but through different exercises, for a total of 12 sets per day, not including abs which are included in every weight training session. For example, one day might be 3 groups of BENCH – (quick rest) – CURLS, followed by 3 groups of CHINUPS – (quick rest) – FLYS.

Sets normally consist of about 12, 10, and 8 reps to fatigue.

Also, is muscle soreness a good indicator of resting that group that day?

For Size and strenght I would recommend bumping up the weight and lowering the reps. Move to more days of lifting and shift your cardio to interval speed training. Also shift your routine every 4-6weeks or whe you plateau.

My week currently consists of
MON: Chest/Tri
TUE: Lowerbody/Core
WED: Back/shoulders
THUR:Cardio/Core
FRI:Chest/Bi
SAT:Lowerbody/Core
SUN:OFF

Do 3-4 exercises for each muscle group, 5-10 reps per. your last rep (especially your last 2 sets) should be to the point of muscle failure. I like to pyramid the large muscles ie chest, quads, hams going form higher reps to lower and increasing wieght, somehting like a 8-5-5-3 with the last set at 90% of your 1RM.
You will want to take a longer break in between sets to let your muscles recover.

Also look into a good supplement stack. You need 1.5-2g of protein per pound of bdoy wight minimum, creatine is a good supp, as well as various amino acids such as glutamine, arganine, etc. Feed your body to grow.

Cardio move to a speed interval training…5 min wamrup and then 90seconds at 60-75% of max speed, then 30-60 seconds at 100%, then repeat for 5-8 reps, cool down. Don;t forget to work your entire core – not just abs and do not neglect your legs. squats and deadlifts are probably the two best all around lifts you can do, PERIOD! I don;t hit both on the same day, squat one, dead another.

You should be sore somewhat…but honestly your body should be adapting to the lifitng and soreness is minimal. If not you maybe be over training. Supplements will help with recovery time too.
